I'm using a carpenters square and the answer comes out to 14.4 inches the book says this is close enough to 14 3/8 inches. How do they get the 3/8 from .4

Answer:

3/8 = 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375

0.375 rounded to the nearest 1/10th = 0.4

Although 0.375 and 0.4 are both decimals, the rounding process is similar to rounding $375 to the nearest hundred dollars. $375 rounded to the nearest hundred dollars = $400.

As a basis of comparison, here is a list of 0.375 rounded to four different levels of accuracy:

0.375 rounded to the nearest 1/1000th = 0.375 (no change)

0.375 rounded to the nearest 1/100th = 0.38

0.375 rounded to the nearest 1/10th = 0.4

0.375 rounded to the nearest 1 = 0

To convert 0.4 to a fraction of 1/8th , multiply 0.4 * (8/8)

The fraction (8/8) is equal to 1, so the decimal 0.4 is merely being multiplied by 1. As you can see by the following illustration, its value has not been changed.

= 0.4

= 0.4 * (8 / 8 )

= 0.4 * 1

= 0.4

Multiply both numerators and multiply both denominators, just as you would when multiplying any two fractions:

0.4 * (8 / 8) = (0.4 / 1) * (8 / 8)

= (0.4 * 8) / (1 * 8)

= (3.2) / (8)

Now round the 3.2 to the nearest whole number

= (3) / (8)

= 3 / 8

0.4 ≈ 3 / 8
