Question:

Solve the equation for x. If necessary, enter fractions in lowest terms, using the slash ( / ) as a fraction bar. -3/5x=1/4

Answer:

(-3 / 5)x = 1 / 4

Multiply each side of the equation by 5 to remove the 5 from the denominator of the fraction (-3 / 5)

(-3 / 5) * x = 1 / 4

5 * (-3 / 5) * x = 5 * (1 / 4)

[(-3 * 5) / 5] * x = 5 * (1 / 4)

[-3 * (5 / 5)] * x = 5 * (1 / 4)

[-3 * (1)] * x = 5 * (1 / 4)

(-3) * x = 5 * (1 / 4)

(-3) * x = (5 * 1) / 4

(-3) * x = 5 / 4

multiply each side of the equation by 1/(-3) to remove the (-3) from the left side of the equation

[(-3) * x] * [1 / (-3)] = (5 / 4) * [1 / (-3)]

x * [(-3) / (-3)] = (5 / 4) * [1 / (-3)]

x * (1) = (5 / 4) * [1 / (-3)]

x = (5 / 4) * [1 / (-3)]

x = (5 * 1) / [4 * (-3)]

x = (5) / (-12)

x = (-5) / (12)

x = -5 / 12

the final answer is: x = -5 / 12

check your work by substituting (-5 / 12) for x in the original equation

(-3 / 5)x = 1 / 4

(-3 / 5) * x = 1 / 4

(-3 / 5) * (-5 / 12) = 1 / 4

[(-3) * (-5)] / [5 * (12)] = 1 / 4

15 / 60 = 1 / 4

(3 * 5) / (3 * 5 * 4) = 1 / 4

[(3 * 5) / (3 * 5)] * (1 / 4) = 1 / 4

[(15) / (15)] * (1 / 4) = 1 / 4

1 * (1 / 4) = 1 / 4

1 / 4 = 1 / 4 → x = (-5 / 12) is a valid solution
