Calculate Satellite Distance Traveled

Use your math skills to answer the following questions:

A satellite travels 7 million miles, circling the earth 270 times in 18 days (exactly).

How many miles does the satellite travel each time it circles the earth?

How many times does the satellite pass overhead each day?

How fast is the satellite traveling in miles per hour (assume the speed is constant for the entire 18 days)?

How much time does it take for the satellite to travel around the earth once?

How many degrees does the satellite travel across the sky in one minute?

How many miles does the satellite travel each time it circles the earth?

Miles traveled in one complete orbit = (7.5 million miles) / (270 orbits)

Miles traveled in one complete orbit = 27,777.8 miles

How many times does the satellite pass overhead each day?

Orbits per day = (270 orbits) / (18 days)

Orbits per day = 15

The satellite will pass overhead 15 times each 24 day.

How fast is the satellite traveling in miles per hour (assume the speed is constant for the entire 18 days)?

Speed = (27,777.8 miles in one orbit) * (15 orbits per day) / 24 hours

Speed = 17361.1 miles per hour

How much time does it take for the satellite to travel around the earth once?

Time to circle the earth once = (24 hours) / (15 orbits per day)

Time to circle the earth once = 1.6 hours (1 hour and 36 minutes)

How many degrees does the satellite travel across the sky in one minute?

= (360 degrees) / [(1.6 hours)*(60 min per hour)]

= 3.75 degrees per minute

Thanks for writing.
