On July 1 the hospital increased its beds to 200 and the number remained 200 through December 31. Answer

Part I

Before completing the calculations, there are four items which are worth noting:

a. The definition of the average daily inpatient census.

Inpatient Census: the number of patients physically present in the healthcare facility at a particular point in time (usually 11:59 pm)

Daily Inpatient Census: a measure of the inpatient services provided by the hospital between Inpatient Census times.

(Daily Inpatient Census, Patient Day, Inpatient Day, Bed occupancy day, Census day, and Inpatient Service Day are equivalent terms. They all mean the same thing.)

Average Daily Census = Total inpatient service days for a period (excluding newborns) ÷ Total number of days in the period

b. Is the year a leap year?

The problem statement does not say whether the year in question is a leap year or not.

This may seem like a small point, but it will affect the answer.

c. Calculating the number of days.

The number of days in the first 6 months can be calculated by adding up the days in each month.

Jan = 31 days
Feb = 28 days, assuming the year is not a leap year
Mar = 31 days
Apr = 30 days
May = 31 days
June = 30 days
-------------------
total = 181 days

If it is a leap year, the month of February will have 29 days and the total number of days will be 182 days (rather than 181 days).

The number of days in the year = 365.242

Assuming the year is NOT a LEAP YEAR we can use 365

If it is a leap year, we should use 366

d. Rounding the calculated answer to the nearest day.

If your calculation shows a decimal of 0.5 or greater, increase the nearest day by one.

For example, 155.563 days = 156 days

If your calculation shows a decimal of less than 0.5, no adjustment to the nearest day is necessary.

For example, 155.463 days = 155 days

Part II

1. What was the average daily inpatient census for the first six months: 153, 154,155, or 156?

if it is not a leap year:

average daily inpatient census

= (27,813 patients days of service)/(181 days)

= 153.6629834, or 154

if it is a leap year, the arithmetic would be

(27,813 patients days of service)/(182 days) = 152.8186813, or 153

2. What was the average daily impatient census for the entire year: 173,174,175, or 193?

1st six months = 27,813
last six months = 35,873
-------------------------------
total: 63,686 patients days of service for the year

if it is not a leap year:

average daily inpatient census

= (63,686 patients days of service)/(365 days)

= 174.4821918, or 174

if it is a leap year:

average daily inpatient census

= (63,686 patients days of service)/(366 days)

= 174.0054645, or 174
