The answer:

3x – 5 = 2(x + 3)

Use the Distributive Law to eliminate the parentheses on the right side of the equation.

3x – 5 = 2(x + 3)

3x – 5 = 2*x + 2*3

3x – 5 = 2x + 6

Subtract 2x from each side of the equation

3x – 5 = 2x + 6

3x – 2x – 5 = 2x – 2x + 6

3x – 2x – 5 = 0 + 6

3x – 2x – 5 = 6

x – 5 = 6

Add 5 to each side of the equation

x – 5 = 6

x – 5 + 5 = 6 + 5

x + 0 = 6 + 5

x = 6 + 5

x = 11

The final answer is: x = 11


As a last step, check the work. Substitute 11 for every x in the original equation.

3x – 5 = 2(x + 3)

3*11 – 5 = 2(11 + 3)

3*11 – 5 = 2(14)

3*11 – 5 = 2*14

3*11 – 5 = 28

33 – 5 = 28

28 = 28

Since 28 does = 28, the solution x = 11 is correct.
