Question:

after spending 3/8 of my salary, i had 980 left. How much is my monthly salary?

Answer:

Before writing the equation, it’s probably a good idea to rewrite the verbal problem statement in a form that mimics the way you would ordinarily think about the problem:

(Monthly Salary) - (Amount Spent) = (Amount Left)

(Monthly Salary) - (3/8 of my salary) = (980 left)

The question now is: what is 3/8 of my salary?

Replace the word “of” with a multiplication sign.

3/8 * my salary

Replace the words “my salary” with a “Monthly Salary”.

3/8 * (Monthly Salary)

The equation now becomes:

(Monthly Salary) - 3/8 * (Monthly Salary) = (980 left)

Solve the equation for “Monthly Salary”

Subtract 3/8 * (Monthly Salary) from the (Monthly Salary)

8/8 * (Monthly Salary) - 3/8 * (Monthly Salary) = (980 left)

5/8 * (Monthly Salary) = 980

Multiply each side of the equation by 8/5 (the reciprocal of 5/8). This multiplication will remove the 5/8 from the left side of the equation.

(8/5) * (5/8) * (Monthly Salary) = (8/5) * 980

(8/5) * (5/8) * (Monthly Salary) = 1568

(8/8) * (5/5) * (Monthly Salary) = 1568

(1) * (1) * (Monthly Salary) = 1568

Monthly Salary = $1568

>>> The final answer is: $1568

Thanks for writing.
