The question:

The answer:

To create your Venn Diagram, draw 3 columns on a piece of paper to serve as a work sheet

Label each column

1st column label: U set

2nd column label: A set

3rd column label: B set

Under the U column, write the elements in the U set

1
2
3
4
5

Under the A column, write the elements in the A set

1
2

Under the B column, write the elements in the B set

1

3

5

Since the columns are side by side, your worksheet should look something like this:

U . . . A . . . B
1 . . . . 1 . . . 1
2 . . . . 2
3 . . . . . . . . .3
4
5 . . . . . . . . .5

Notice that the 1 appears in all three sets, the 2 appears only in sets U and A, the 3 appears only in sets U and B, and so on. This is the information you will use to fill in your Venn Diagram.

Since I cannot upload pictures on this comment page, go to:

http://www.classroomjr.com/printable-blank-venn-diagrams/3-circle-venn-diagram-blank/

Print or Copy the 3 circle blank Venn Diagram.

Label the circle on the upper left ?U?, the circle on the upper right ?A?, and the lower circle ?B?

Now fill in the blanks:

Write a 1 in the very center of the diagram, where all three circles overlap. Since the 1 appears in all three columns on your worksheet, it must be written so that it appears inside all three circles at the same time.

Write a 2 where the U and A circles overlap (just above the center of the diagram, not in the center), but NOT where the B circle overlaps. Since the 2 appears only appears in the U and A columns on your worksheet, it must be written so that it only appears inside the U and A circles at the same time.

Write a 3 where the U and B circles overlap (slightly down, and to the left of the center of the diagram, not in the center), but NOT where the A circle overlaps. Since the 3 appears in the U and B columns on your worksheet, it must be written so that it only appears inside the U and B circles at the same time.

Write a 5 where the U and B circles overlap (the same place you just wrote the 3).

Write a 4 in a portion of the U circle which does not overlap either of the other circles. The 4 appears only in the U column on your work sheet. It does not appear in the A or B columns, so the 4 cannot be appear anywhere inside the A or B circles.

You are finished. The Venn Diagram is complete.

Your Venn Diagram is a picture of the information on your work sheet. It shows what elements the sets have in common, and which elements are not in common.

Your final Venn Diagram should look like this (click link to view):
