Answer:

Use the PEMDAS order of operations to find the numerical value.

PEMDAS stands for a six step process. Each letter stands for a different mathematical procedure:

P = Parentheses

E = Exponents

M = Multiplication

D = Division

A = Addition

S = Subtraction

The order of the letters tells you which mathematical operation to complete first, second, . . . etc.

Complete 1st = Parentheses

Complete 2nd = Exponents

Complete 3rd = Multiplication

Complete 4th = Division

Complete 5th = Addition

Complete 6th = Subtraction

Step 1: you should evaluate the expression inside each set of PARENTHESES

PEMDAS order of evaluation: PARENTHESES, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction

There is one parentheses.

. . . (1 * 2) . . .

(1 * 2)

= 2

6 - (1 * 2)/2

A recap of the PEMDAS simplification process up to this point is shown below:

6 - (1 * 2)/2

= 6 - (2)/2

Step 2: evaluate EXPONENTS

PEMDAS order of evaluation for (simplified) overall expression: parentheses, EXPONENTS, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction

There are no exponents to evaluate.

Step 3: MULTIPLICATION

PEMDAS order of evaluation: parentheses, exponents, MULTIPLICATION, division, addition, subtraction

There is no multiplication to evaluate.

Step 4: DIVISION

PEMDAS order of evaluation: parentheses, exponents, multiplication, DIVISION, addition, subtraction

There is one operation involving division.

(2)/2

= 1

A recap of the PEMDAS simplification process up to this point is shown below:

6 - (1 * 2)/2

= 6 - (2)/2

= 6 - 1

Step 5: evaluate ADDITION & SUBTRACTION

PEMDAS order of evaluation: parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, ADDITION, SUBTRACTION

6 - 1

= 5

After completing this last step, you are finished.

The final answer to your question is: 5

6 - (1 * 2)/2 = 5

A step-by-step recap of the entire process is shown below:

6 - (1 * 2)/2

= 6 - (2)/2

= 6 - 1

= 5
