Evaluating Expressions Without Calculator

Question:
Without using a calculator, how do you evaluate 18-6*sqrt(5)-6*sqrt(14-6*sqrt(5)) ?

Answer:

18-6*sqrt(5)-6*sqrt(14-6*sqrt(5))

2(3² - 3√(5) - 3√(14 - 6√(5))

There doesn’t appear to be an obvious way to simplify the radicals by factoring them into a squared expression.

However, there are a variety of ways to determine the roots numerically, without a calculator. Here are three:

1. Direct, digit by digit calculation (the Chinese Method)
2. Newton-Raphson method
3. Guess & Check Method

All three methods are fully explained here:

18-6*sqrt(5)-6*sqrt(14-6*sqrt(5)) = 0

(yes, I did use a calculator)

Thanks for writing.
