Question:

Is 3 ½ Greater than. 3 2/3 ?

Answer:

There are two different ways to compare these numbers:

1. Rewrite both fractions so that they each have the same denominator
2. Change both fractions into their decimal equivalent.

-----------------------------

1. Rewrite both fractions so that they each have the same denominator (just as you would if you were adding or subtracting the fractions)

(1/2) * (3/3) = 3/6

(2/3) * (2/2) = 4/6

Now the numbers can easily be compared:

3 2/3 = 3 4/6

3 1/2 = 3 3/6

3 4/6 is greater than 3 3/6

Therefore, 3 2/3 is greater than 3 1/2

2. Change both fractions into their decimal equivalent

(1/2) = 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5

(2/3) = 2 ÷ 3 = 0.666667

Now the numbers can easily be compared:

3 2/3 = 3.666667

3 1/2 = 3.5

3.666667 is greater than 3.5

Therefore, 3 2/3 is greater than 3 1/2

The final answer is: 3 2/3 is greater than 3 1/2
