The question:

is -7 greater than or less than -4

The answer:

The easiest way to tell which number is greater (or smaller) is to put both numbers on a number line.

The number to the left is the smaller number. The number to the right is the larger number.

When -7 and -4 are plotted on a number line the -7 is to the left of the -4. This means that the -7 is less than -4.
