Every real number has certain PROPERTIES associated with it (properties that are associated with the each individual number). For example, when two real numbers are added together the result is always another real number. This is a PROPERTY associated with every real number, individually. The INVERSE PROPERTY OF MULTIPLICATION is also a property associated with every non-zero real number, individually. The INVERSE PROPERTY OF MULTIPLICATION states that every non-zero real number has an inverse property: The multiplicative inverse property of every non-zero real number is its reciprocal. ¼ and 4 is the multiplicative inverse of 4. 4 is the multiplicative inverse of ¼. Why? Is this a useful concept? This is the point: When a number and its multiplicative inverse are multiplied together, the result is always 1. Always. This property is used to help solve equations. For example, solve the following equation: 2x = 16 Multiply each side of the equation by the multiplicative inverse of 2 (which is ½).
