Math - Associative Property

The following equation demonstrates the use of the Associative Property.

Solve the following equation for the "?":

(10+9)+8= ? +(9+8)

The Associative Property answers the following two questions:

1. Can you add a series of numbers together in any order?

2. Will the final answer be the same regardless of the order you choose?

Associative Property of Addition
by: Staff

The question:

(10 + 9) + 8 = ? + (9 + 8)

The answer:

Your question is an interesting problem based on the Associative Property of Addition

The Associative Property of Addition is one The Seven Fundamental Properties of Real Numbers

This particular property is one of the important characteristics of real numbers which make them useful in everyday life.

The Associative Property answers the following two questions: Can you add a series of numbers together in any order? Will the final answer be the same regardless of the order you choose?

The answer to both of these questions is yes.

Associative Property of Addition states:
Any series of numbers can be grouped in any way and added in any order without changing the results.

This is true for both positive and negative integers, fractions, decimals, and algebraic variables.

The following examples will illustrate this principle

Example 1: (positive integers) 1 + (2 + 5) = (1 + 2) + 5 = (1 + 5) + 2

Example 2: (negative numbers) 1 + ([-2] + 5) = (1 + [-2]) + 5 = (1 + 5) + [-2]

Example 3: (fractions) 1/5 + (2/3 + 17/18) = (1/5 + 2/3) + 17/18 = (1/5 + 17/18) + 2/3

Example 4: (decimals) 2.1 + (0.155 + 0.009) = (2.1 + 0.155) + 0.009 = (2.1 + 0.009) + 0.155

Example 5: (algebraic notation) a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c = (a + c) + b

-------------------------------------------------------

The answer to your problem:

(10 + 9) + 8 = ? + (9 + 8)

? = 10

(10 + 9) + 8 = 10 + (9 + 8)
