Question:

WHATS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DOUBLE AND HALF

Answer:

Double means two of, or two times.

Double can be two times anything, such as two times ½ or two times 36; or, in a general sense: 2x. x can be a number or anything else. For example, double the number of pancakes you plan to prepare.

The term “half” means times ½. Half = ½ * x. x can be a number or anything else. For example, give me half of the green marbles you have.

To determine the relationship between double and half, you must start at the same point.

That point is x (which can stand for anything).

Double x means 2*x.

Half x means ½ * x.

The ratio of double to half is:

= (2*x) ÷ (½ * x)

= (2*x) / (½ * x)

= (2 / ½) * (x / x)

= (2 / ½) * (1)

= (2 / ½)

= 4

The final answer is: double (some quantity) is 4 times as great as ½ (the quantity)
