Math Question Problem - Puzzle

by MUHAMMAD RUHUL
(DUBAI , UNITED ARAB EMIRATES)

You saw a shirt for $97
You didn't have the cash, so you borrowed $50 from your dad and $50 from your mom.
           $50 + $50 = $100
You bought the shirt, and have $3 change. You gave your dad $1 and your mom $1 and kept the other $1 for yourself. Now you owe your dad $49 and your mom $49.
           $49 + $49 = $98 + your $1 = $99
Where is the missing $1?

Answer

You have already accounted for every dollar.

There is no extra dollar.

Think of this puzzle as an equation which must be in balance.

You borrowed:

from Dad + from Mom = total borrowed

$50 + $50 = $100

It doesn’t matter whether you spend the money or not. What matters (mathematically) is what you pay back.

You pay back $1 to your Dad and $1 to your Mom.

Subtract 2 from each side of the equation.

50 - 1 + 50 - 1 = 100 - 1 - 1

49 + 49 = 98

If you look at it this way, everything is in balance.

It doesn’t matter what you do with the $98. You can spend $97 on a shirt and keep $1. You can keep all $98 and spend nothing on a shirt.

Thanks for writing.
