Question:

Aaron Architects is making a scale drawing of a house using the scale 1/2 in. = 5ft. The house is 27.5 feet high. How high will it be in the drawing?

Answer:

The easiest way to solve this problem is to set up a proportion.

x = height of drawing

(height of drawing)/(actual height of house) = (½ inch)/(5 feet)

(x)/(27.5) = (0.5)/(5)

To solve for x, multiply each side of the equation by 27.5

[(x)/(27.5)]*27.5 = [(0.5)/(5)]*27.5

[(x)/(27.5)]*27.5 = [(0.5)/(5)]*27.5

x*(27.5/27.5) = [(0.5)/(5)]*27.5

x*(1) = [(0.5)/(5)]*27.5

x = [(0.5)/(5)]*27.5

x = (0.5*27.5)/5

x = 2.75 inches

the final answer is: the height of the drawing = 2.75 inches

Thanks for writing.
