Overbar
by: Staff

The question:

What does a dash above the decimal portion of a number mean?

The answer:

A horizontal line drawn over the top of the decimal portion of a number is called by various names: OVERBAR, VINCULUM, OVERLINE, or OVERSCORE.

It is used to show that the decimal is a REPEATING DECIMAL.

It is difficult to type an overbar over a series of numbers on a computer screen. Therefore, the following notation is sometimes used:
5.¯2

5.¯2 stands for 5.222222222222222?

The question

overbar is on 15-3 then what is the value of ...13 +(26-15-3)

The answer:

13 +(26-15¯3)

= 13 +(26-15.333333333…)

Convert the repeating decimal into a fraction

= 13 + (26 - 15⅓)

From this point on, use PEMDAS order to complete the arithmetic

PEMDAS order tells you what to do first, second, . . . etc.

PEMDAS stands for: parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction

Step 1: evaluate PARENTHESES

PEMDAS order of evaluation: PARENTHESES, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction

= 13 + (26 - 15⅓)

= 13 + (26 - 46/3)

= 13 + (78/3 - 46/3)

= 13 + (78 - 46)/3

= 13 + (32)/3

= 13 + 32/3

Step 2: evaluate EXPONENTS

PEMDAS order of evaluation: parentheses, EXPONENTS, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction

There area no exponents to evaluate.

Step 3: MULTIPLICATION

PEMDAS order of evaluation: parentheses, exponents, MULTIPLICATION, division, addition, subtraction

There is no multiplication to evaluate

Step 4: DIVISION

PEMDAS order of evaluation: parentheses, exponents, multiplication, DIVISION, addition, subtraction

There are no parts of your expression which require division.

Step 5: evaluate ADDITION & SUBTRACTION

PEMDAS order of evaluation: parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, ADDITION, SUBTRACTION

= 13 + 32/3

= 39/3 + 32/3

= (39 + 32)/3

= (71)/3

= 71/3

= 23⅔

The final answer is:

= 23⅔

Check your answer. Use a calculator or use Microsoft Excel

The original problem

= 13+(26-15.333333333…)

= 23.6667

The final answer is:

= 23⅔

= 23 + ⅔

= 23.6667
