Multiply Mixed Numbers
by: Staff

The question:

1 2/3 x 2 1/2

The answer:

1 2/3 x 2 1/2

The easiest way (not the only way) to multiply these mixed numbers is to convert each number to an improper fraction, and then multiply the fractions.

Convert 1 2/3 to an improper fraction

The numerator will be 1*3+2 = 5

The denominator will be = 3

1 2/3 = 5/3

Convert 2 ½ to an improper fraction

The numerator will be 2*2+1 = 5

The denominator will be = 2

2 ½ = 5/2

Multiply the two improper fractions by multiplying the numerators together and the denominators together

(5/3)*(5/2)

= (5*5)/(3*2)

= 25/6

The final answer as an improper fraction is: 25/6

If you wish to convert the fraction 25/6 into a mixed number, just divide 25 by 6

25 ÷ 6 = 4 remainder 1

= 4 1/6

The final answer as a mixed number is: 4 1/6

Check your answer. Use a calculator or use Microsoft Excel

The original problem can be entered into Excel as follows:

= (1+2/3) * (2+1/2)

Excel will compute

= 4.166667

The final solution to the problem can be entered into Excel as follows:

= 4 + 1/6

Excel will compute

= 4.166667

These calculations verify that:

(1 2/3) * (2 ½) = 4 1/6 = 4.166667

Thanks for writing.
