Math - Units of Measurement

how many 1/3cups are in 1/4 cup

compute the answer by dividing 1/4 cup by 1/3 cup

notice that the unit "cup" cancels, so that you are left with a number which does not have a unit associated with it

The question:

how many1/3cup are in 1/4 cup

The answer:

How many1/3 cups are in a 1/4 cup measurement?

Before I compute the answer, here is a similar example you are already familiar with:

How many groups of 2 are in the number 10?

10 ÷ 2 = 5

There are 5 groups of 2 in the number 10

1st group: 1, 2
2nd group: 3, 4
3rd group: 5, 6
4th group: 7, 8
5th group: 9, 10

We can apply this same reasoning to your problem:

How many 1/3 cups are in 1/4 of a cup?

= ¼ cup ÷ ⅓ cup

= ¼ ÷ ⅓

Reverse the numerator and denominator on the second fraction, and then multiply the two fractions:

= ¼ * 3/1

Multiply the numerators of the two fractions together, and multiply the denominators of the two fractions together.

= (1*3)/(4*1)

= (3)/(4)

= ¾

The final answer: there is ¾ of a ⅓ measuring cup in a ¼ measuring cup.

Skeptical? Not sure whether this answer is correct?

Here is a way to check the answer:

Multiply ⅓ cup by ¾. It should come out ¼ cup, exactly.

= (⅓ cup) * ¾

Multiply the numerators of the two fractions together, and multiply the denominators of the two fractions together.

= (1*3)/(3*4)

= (3)/(12)

= 3/12

Reducing this fraction to its lowest terms:

= ¼ cup

Thanks for writing.
