The answer:

16 is 4 less than

Substitute an = sign for the word “is”

16 = 4 less than

Insert the word “number”

16 = 4 less than “a number”

Substitute the variable x for the words “a number”

16 = 4 LESS THAN x

16 equals “a number” MINUS 4

16 = x - 4

Solve for x

16 = x - 4

Add 4 to each side of the equation

16 + 4 = x - 4 + 4

16 + 4 = x + 0

16 + 4 = x

20 = x

The unknown number is 20

The final answer is: 20
