NOT Subset - Math Symbol
by: Staff

The question:

the D set is not the subset of the set S

The answer:

The symbol for “not a subset” is ⊄.

To type ⊄, hold down the “alt”key, type 8836, and then release the alt key.

D set is not the subset of the set S should be written:

D ⊄ S

You can use this symbol if one of the following criteria applies:

(1) . . . Both Set "D" and Set "S" have NOTHING IN COMMON. Each set contains completely different elements.

For example:

Set D = {pogo stick, painting}

Set S = {computer, table, lamp, stove, window}

D ⊄ S

Or

Set D = {3, 4}

Set S = {22, 27, 33, 51,97}

D ⊄ S

(2) . . . All of the elements in Set “D” do not appear in Set “S”. Set “D” contains some of the elements in set “S”, but Set “D” also contains other elements which do not appear in Set “S”.

For example:

Set D = {22, 4}

Set S = {22, 27, 33, 51,97}

D ⊄ S

Thanks for writing.
