History of Math Symbols
by: Staff

The question:

What is the history behind the invention of the symbols used in mathematics?

The answer:

This has always been a fascinating question.

If you have already read the introduction to math symbols (http://www.solving-math-problems.com/math-symbols.html), you know that Symbols are a concise way of giving lengthy instructions related to numbers and logic. Math Symbols are a kind of short-hand: they are used to eliminate the need to write long, plain language instructions to describe calculations and other processes.

The time line of when these short-hand symbols were invented spans thousands of years of history and includes contributions from all the great civilizations (Hindu, Babylonians, Phoenicians, Greek, Romans, Chinese, Japanese, and many others).

Each individual symbol is an interesting study just by itself.

A comprehensive discussion of many of these symbols is: A HISTORY OF MATHEMATAICAL NATATIONS by Florian Cajori.

You can buy the book, or read it on-line at http://books.google.com/books?id=7juWmvQSTvwC&printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&q&f=false.

Thanks for asking such an interesting question.
