The /20 probably means all the natural numbers (integers) up to and including the number 20. I don’t remember having seen this notation before.

Beginning with the number 4, add +3

a_n = a_1 + (n - 1) * (d)


a_n = a with a subscript of n (this is the nth term in the series)

a_1 = a with a subscript of 1 (this is the 1st term in the series)

n = number of terms

d = difference between consecutive terms


Applying the notation to your sequence

a_1 = 4

d = difference between consecutive terms = 3
(7-714 = 3, and 10-7 = 3, and 13-10 = 3)


a_n = a_1 + (n - 1) * (d)

a_n = 4 + (n - 1) * (3)




a_n = 4 + (n - 1) * (3)

a_n = 4 + 3(n - 1)

a_n = 4 + 3n - 3)

a_n = 1 + 3n


the final answer is: the nth term in the sequence = 1 + 3n
