Answer

Make sure you read how to download free formula calculators (at the end of this post).

Part I

6 - 1 × 0 + 2 divided by 2 = ?

6 - 1 × 0 + 2 ÷ 2

To simplify this expression:

Use the PEMDAS order of operations.

To continue the simplification process, use the PEMDAS order of operations.

PEMDAS order tells you what to do first, second, . . . etc.

PEMDAS stands for: parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction

Step 1: evaluate PARENTHESES

PEMDAS order of evaluation: PARENTHESES, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction

There are no expressions enclosed in parentheses

Step 2: evaluate EXPONENTS

PEMDAS order of evaluation: parentheses, EXPONENTS, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction

There are no exponents to evaluate.

Step 3: MULTIPLICATION

PEMDAS order of evaluation: parentheses, exponents, MULTIPLICATION, division, addition, subtraction

6 - 1 × 0 + 2 ÷ 2

There is one place where multiplication must be completed: - 1 × 0

- 1 × 0 = 0

After completing the multiplication, the expression looks like this:

6 + 2 ÷ 2

Step 4: DIVISION

PEMDAS order of evaluation: parentheses, exponents, multiplication, DIVISION, addition, subtraction

There is one place where division must be completed: 2 ÷ 2

6 + 2 ÷ 2

2 ÷ 2 = 1

After completing the division, the expression looks like this:

6 + 1

Step 5: evaluate ADDITION & SUBTRACTION

PEMDAS order of evaluation: parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, ADDITION, SUBTRACTION

6 + 1

= 7

The final answer is: 7

This problem also illustrates how important it is to include parentheses to clarify the order of operations.

To ensure every reader understands the expression, it should have been written

6 + (- 1 × 0) + (2 ÷ 2)

Instead of

6 - 1 × 0 + 2 ÷ 2

Part II

You may have doubts about whether the answer really is 7.

Perhaps some of your friends have arrived at a different answer.

There is only one correct answer, not a variety of answers depending on how you look at the problem. Your opinion does not matter. My opinion does not matter.

The one correct answer is based upon PEMDAS . . . PAMDAS applied mechanically (ruthlessly, if you will).

Verify that the answer really is “7” using A "Smart" Calculator (Formula Calculator).

A Formula Calculator (Smart Calculator) automatically takes PEMDAS order into account.

The person using the calculator does not need to be concerned about which numbers to evaluate 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.

Type the entire expression into the “smart” calculator, just as you gave it to me: 6 - 1 × 0 + 2 ÷ 2. Don’t change anything.
