The solution


Hi Kandi,


Original Problem

3x^2 = 12


The approach

Solve for “x”. Solving for “x” means that “x” will be on one side of the equal sign (by itself).


Step 1 – divide each side of the equation by 3 (this will remove the 3 from the left hand side of the equation)

(3x^2)/3 = 12/3

x^2 = 4


Step 2 – take the square root of each side of the equation (this will remove the ^2 from the left hand side of the equation)

x^2 = 4

Square Root of (x^2) = Square Root of (4)

There are two answers

x = + 2, x = - 2


Step 3 – check your work. Substitute your answers in the original equation. Your answers are correct if the value on the left of the equal sign is the same as the value on the right of the equal sign.

3x^2 = 12


For x = + 2,

(3)(2^2) =12

(3)(4) = 12

12 = 12

The first answer (x = 2) is correct because 12 does equal 12


For x = - 2,

(3)((-2)^2) =12

(3)(4) = 12

12 = 12

The second answer (x = - 2) is also correct because 12 does equal 12
