The question:

(Singapore)

Anne had $165 and Cally had $200 at first .

After spending an equal amount of money , Cally had twice as much money as Anne.

How much money did each of them spend ?

The answer:

Select variables:

A = amount of money Ann had at first
C = amount of money Cally had at first

X = amount of money each spent.

Write equations:

Anne had $165 and Cally had $200 at first .

A = 165
C = 200

After spending an equal amount of money , Cally had twice as much money as Anne.

C – X = 2 * (A – X)

Enter known values (substitute 200 for C and 165 for A):

C – X = 2 * (A – X)

200 – X = 2 * (165 – X)

Solve for X:

Use the distributive law to eliminate the parentheses on the right side of the equation

200 – X = 2 * (165 – X)

200 – X = 330 – 2X

Subtract 200 from each side of the equation to eliminate the 200 on the left side

200 - 200 – X = 330 - 200 – 2X

0 – X = 130 – 2X

– X = 130 – 2X

Add 2X to each side of the equation to group all the X variables on the left side

– X = 130 – 2X

– X + 2X = 130 – 2X + 2X

X = 130 + 0

X = 130

The final answer is: Ann and Cally each spent $130

Check your answer:

After spending an equal amount of money, Cally had twice as much money as Anne.

C – X = 2 * (A – X)

200 – 130 = 2 * (165 – 130)

70 = 2 * 35

70 = 70, therefore X = 130 is the correct answer.

Thanks for writing.
