The question:

Express each set in set builder notation.



The answer:

D= {5, 10,15,20,...}

Note that slight variations of this format are used by different people

x = number

∈, element of a set

| and : are used interchangeably. Both notations mean “such that”


Set = {number : type of number , conditions}, or

Set = { number | type of number , conditions }

Set D = {x : x=5n, n ∈N}


Sets of Standard Number Types

N = Set of all Natural Numbers
Z = Set of all Integers
Q = Set of all Rational Numbers
A = Set of all algebraic numbers
R = Set of all real numbers
I = Set of all imaginary numbers
C = Set of all complex numbers
