Answer:

Part I

As you know, the = sign in an equation means that the values on the left side of the equation and the right side of the equation are equivalent.

The variables and numbers on the left side of the equation may be different from the variables and numbers on the right side of the equation, but they are equivalent.

This is similar to saying that a dollar bill = 4 quarters.

Even though a dollar bill is physically different than four quarters, their monetary value is exactly the same.

The left and right sides of your equation can be viewed weights on a teeter totter. The left side of your equation is on the left side of the teeter totter. The right side of your equation is on the right side of the teeter totter.

When the teeter tooter is level, the weight on both the right and left hand sides is equal.

This corresponds to your original equation.

           A
           -- = $1.25
           8

 Math – Equation and Teeter Totter

If weight is added or subtracted evenly from each side of the teeter totter, it will remain level.

If weight is added to each end of a teeter tooter unevenly, it will tip.

Unbalanced Teeter Totter

So, mathematically, it is very important to add, multiply, or divide each side of the equation by exactly the same amount. (This will keep the equation in balance.)

This is how your equation is solved.

Your original equation is:

           A
           -- = $1.25
           8

Multiply both sides of the equation by 8. This will remove the 8 from the denominator on the left side of the equation

Part II

           A    8                8
           -- * --- = $1.25 * ---
           8    1                1

Cancel the 8’s which appear in both the numerator and denominator on the left side of the equation.

           A    8                8
           -- * --- = $1.25 * ---
           8    1                1

           A                8
           -- = $1.25 * ---
           1                1

           A = $1.25 * 8

           A = $10.00

Final Answer:

                 A = $10.00

------------------------------
Check the answer:

Substitute the value of $10 for the variable “A”

           A
           -- = $1.25
           8

           10
           ---- = $1.25
            8

           $1.25 = $1.25, OK → A = $10 is a valid solution
