Length and Width of Bridge

The length of a piece of bridge is 5 meters less than double the width. The perimeter is 38 meters. What is the length and width of each piece of steel?

38 = 2W + 2*(2W - 5)

38 = 2W + 4W - 10

38 = 6W - 10

38 + 10 = 6W - 10 + 10

48 = 6W + 0

48 = 6W

6W = 48

6W / 6 = 48 / 6

W * (6 / 6) = 48 / 6

W * (1) = 48 / 6

W = 48 / 6

W = 8

L = 2W - 5

L = 2*8 – 5


L = 16 - 5

L = 11


Final Answer: W = 8 meters, L = 11 meters
