Question:

Sophia runs twice as fast as Mia. If Mia runs 3 mph, how long will it take Sophia to run 6mph? 9mph?

Answer:

I think you really meant to phrase your question like this: Sophia runs twice as fast as Mia. If Mia runs 3 mph, how long will it take Sophia to run 6 miles? 9 miles?

If Mia runs 3 mph, then Sophia runs 6 mph.

distance = rate * time

time = distance/rate

how long will it take Sophia to run 6 miles?

time = distance / rate

mph = miles per hour = miles / hour = m/h

time = 6 m / (6 mph)

time = 6 m / (6 m/h)

time = (6 m) * [h / (6 m)]

time = (6 / 6) * (m / m) * h

The units which stand for miles (represented by m) cancel one another (m / m = 1).

time = (1) * (1) * h

>>> time = 1 hour

how long will it take Sophia to run 9 miles?

time = distance / rate

time = 9 m / (6 mph)

time = 9 m / (6 m/h)

time = (9 m) * [h / (6 m)]

time = (9 / 6) * (m / m) * h

time = (1.5) * (1) * h

time = 1.5 hours

>>> time = 1 ½ hours

Thanks for writing.
