Answer

Part I

Word Problem - how many more points were scored in the second game?

x = points scored in game 1

y = points scored in game 2

SUE SCORED A TOTAL OF 35 POINTS IN TWO GAMES

x + y = 35

SHE SCORED 6 TIMES AS MANY POINTS IN THE SECOND GAME AS IN THE FIRST.

y = 6x

there are two equations and two unknowns

 Word Problem - 2 equations, 2 unknowns:

        x + y = 35

        y = 6x

Part II

to solve for x, substitute 6x for the value of y in the first equation, and then combine like terms

x + y = 35

y = 6x

x + 6x = 35

7x = 35

substitute 6x for y

combine all x terms in the equation

divide each side of the equation by 7

7x = 35

7x / 7 = 35 / 7

(7 / 7) * x = 35 / 7

(1) * x = 35 / 7

x = 35 / 7

x = 5 points

Part III

divide each side of the equation by 7

solve for y

substitute the 5 for the value of x in either one of the two original equations

I'll use the second equation

y = 6x

y = 6 * 5

y = 30

solve for y by substituting 5 for the value of x

Part IV

HOW MANY MORE POINTS DID SHE SCORE IN THE SECOND GAME?

additional points = y - x

additional points = 30 - 5

additional points = 25 points

calculate y - x

the final answer

5 points scored in the first game

30 points scored in the second game

Sue scored 25 additional points in the second game

word problem - final answer - additional points scored in 2nd game
